DRUM N BASS / DUBSTEP 35 7 www.guestlist.net Issue 48 / 2013 ALBUM OF THE MONTH BLOW THE ROOF GUESTLIST RECOMMENDS INSTRA:MENTAL Flux Pavilion comes back with some surprisingly creative dubstep. Blow the Roof is the new eight track album by English DJ and dubstep artist, Joshua Steele aka Flux Pavilion. He is also the co-founder of Circus Records, along with Doctor P and DJ Swan-E, and amongst his influences we can find the likes of The Prodigy, Basement Jaxx and dubstep pioneer Rusko. The album was released last month under the label Big Beat Records and mixes old school and new school -from 80's style hip-hop rhymes to sounds of warped bass. But Blow the Roof is also a work full of surprises like the appearance by comedian/actor Donald Glover performing his alter ego Childish Gambino to rap lyrics on the track 'Do or Die'. With energetic and bass-heavy tracks such as 'OneTwoThree (Make Your Body Wanna)' and 'Starlight' Pavillion's new work won't let you stand still for a minute. Pavilion, as a good lover of high energy madness, knows how to transform every beat in his own form of dubstep. EVENT REVIEW HOSPITALITY Perhaps known to a select few as eclectic figures in the drum and bass genre, but by and large unrecognized as the creative pioneers that they are. Instra:mental need to be heard. Alex Green and Damon Kirkham are the guys behind Instra:mental; a drum and bass alias with a penchant for deep, soulful soundscapes and lush layered textures. These guys are working hard to develop their very own brand of drum and bass that breaks away from the norms and traditions of todays dnb scene, which is like a breath of fresh air when you hear it. As of 2011 however, since their last album "Resolution 653" the duo have since split up and parted ways. A somewhat sad end to a partnership that brought us tracks like Pacific Heights and Watching You. However since then, both Alex and Damon have been working on new solo projects. Alex has now re-emerged as Boddika and started producing deep techno with deeper rhythms. Damon on the other hand has been doing something similar as Jon Convex, working on his very own style of scifi techno inspired by the movies he used to watch as a kid. Damon has been outspoken about the break-up of Instra:mental of it being in no way moody. It is indeed a shame that we will no longer hear the pair working together on their classic drum and bass soundscapes, but you need only to listen to their old records to remember how different these guys were to everyone else at the time. True pioneers in every sense of the word. Check out their 2011 album Resolution 653 if you haven't already and be prepared to be taken on a journey through sound. NEW MUSIC OF THE MONTH We give you hottest tunes, mixes and free downloads to check out this month... 1. MixCloud UKF Music Podcast #13 If you wanted a way to welcome in 2013 and shake off those January blues, there was no better place to have been on Friday night...A vital appointment. Of course, it was time for another classic pilgrimage of ravers to the dazzling 02 Academy in Brixton for what I consider the finest club night in drum and bass; Hospitality. A particularly special line up was waiting to be unleashed on the masses, to both those present and those watching on the exclusive online stream. A wonderful mix of familiar favourites and newer signings featured Roni Size armed with a 'Full Cycle' Classics set, Metrik delivering his exclusive Hospital debut and of course David Rodigan giving enough signal to keep the capital in power for the entire night. Kicking off proceedings was the aforementioned Metrik (aka Tom Mundell), snapped up by the label back in November. Dropping a fiery set which ended with an incredible VIP of the huge 'Freefall', he is a hive of fresh energy and will certainly have a huge year ahead! 4. Soundcloud DJ Kerin Liquid DnB Minimix 1 2.
