INDIE / ROCK 38 www.guestlist.net Issue 48 / 2013 GUESTLIST RECOMMENDS: B A S T I L L E South London's four piece band is about to blow up, and we will be there to see it happening! Bastille started like the solo project of Dan Smith, who, like many other musicians, started writing songs in his room. He then decided he wanted to be in a band. So in 2010, he pushed things forward and teamed up with a few friends to form this project until they were a quartet. They consist of Dan Smith, Chris 'Woody' Wood, Will Farquarson and Kyle Simmons. Bastille comes from Bastille Day, and is actually the day Dan Smith was born. They are now about to release their first fulllength album, Bad Blood, which will be out on the 4th March. On recording their new album, Dan Smith explains, '...we basically made the album in a studio the size of a cupboard, so it was one extreme to the other. Producing the record, I wanted to off-set epic sounding instrumentation with lyrics that combine intimate stories or ALBUM OF THE MONTH I AM KLOOT conversation. The contrast was something that appealed to me.' Among their songs, we can highlight 'Flaws' and 'Sleepsong'. Smith wanted 'each to be its own story with its own atmosphere which brings in different sounds and elements of production, incorporating aspects of the different genres and styles that I love: hiphop, indie, pop and folk.' Before the album comes out, they still have another single to release called 'Pompeii' which is 'a moment of reflection and introspection, but they're trapped in time so it's a moment that'll go on for an eternity' Smith tells NME. They are currently supporting Two Door Cinema's Tour, and after the album release, they will embark on a headline tour including two nights at the Shepherds Bush Empire in London. NEW MUSIC OF THE MONTH So it's a new start to the year and we are excited about the calibre of music coming through. Keep your ears locked to these new tunes... 1. I Am Kloot, formed in 1999 by John Bramwell, Peter Jobson, and Andy Hargreaves have been succeeding lately, especially with their fifth studio album Sky at Night reaching number 24 in the UK charts and being shortlisted for the Mercury Prize. They will start touring the UK on 12th February in Glasgow and stopping in Leeds, Manchester, Nottingham, London, Brighton, Bristol and Cambridge. The tour, which will also take them to other European capitals such as Paris, Brussels, Munich or Vienna, will end on 16th June with a last gig at the Isle of Wight Festival, UK. 2.
