C C O N S T E L L A T I O N WinStarFarm.com Shareholder Profile: Sandra Sexton 117 The success of Red Ruby is bittersweet, though, as she made her first start in October 2017, four months after Hargus passed away at the age of 96. This year marks a decade since the Sextons and Nicholsons teamed up, and it is a partnership that is continuing to flourish despite the obvious sadness that came with the loss of Hargus. "Hargus and Sandra became like family to us," said Nicholson. "My husband is from New Zealand, and I am not from Kentucky either. At the time, when we became partners with the Sextons, we didn't have any extended family here. It has been different without having Hargus. It's been sad to not have him around. "We are so thankful the partnership came when it did and has endured as long as it has. They were very established breeders before we ever came in the picture. We were glad to be able to learn from them and be able to help them with the physical aspect of the farm. It has worked out really well." Another thing that is continuing to endure is the connection Sexton has with WinStar. "I'm impressed with the way WinStar handles their stallions, and Elliott is a very honest, nice person," said Sexton, who is currently a shareholder in around 10 WinStar stallions. "Hargus was very loyal to the Walden family, and we are very appreciative of WinStar. We try to get a share in all their horses. They have been great, they have been fair, and they do a good job. We've been friends for a longtime. Without them, we wouldn't have been as successful." As for Sexton, she remains committed to the industry and still f inds pleasure in every horse that she is involved with. "I love the foals," she said. "I still get active with them. I try to halter break them all. It's a treat to be able to go in and fool with them. When you get a new one, it's like Christmas when you open up your packages because you don't know what is coming out. I don't know that you ever have a favorite horse because a new one will come along, and it is a favorite in a different way. Every single one is an individual. "After I lost Hargus, there was never any doubt that I would continue on with the horses. Hargus would have been very disappointed if I had done something else because we always enjoyed it so much."
