C C O N S T E L L A T I O N WinStarFarm.com Remembering Battle of Midway 63 Battle of Midway Battle of Midway as a yearling Battle of Midway's first foal out of La Boheme that he was one that would dig in and not shy away from a challenge." When Battle of Midway retired after his Breeders' Cup win to stand at WinStar Farm, the Nygaards bought back into him as shareholders in his stallion career and bred a couple of mares to him before he was found to be sub-fertile and was sent back into training. Neither of their mares became pregnant, but the Nygaards bought one of the few mares that Battle of Midway did impregnate, and La Boheme delivered Battle of Midway's first foal on Feb. 7 at Chesapeake. One of the only races Battle of Midway competed in that the Nygaards missed seeing in person turned out to be his last. They were traveling to Europe that day, on Feb. 2, and watched online while they were going through airport security as Battle of Midway out-gamed heavy favorite McKinzie in the stretch to prevail in the San Pasqual Stakes (G2) at Santa Anita. "I think that race said so much about him," Pavla said. "Since the accident happened I've heard from a lot of people, whether I knew them or not, expressing their sorrow and how much he meant to them, and I think that since he was such a trier it spoke to people. It certainly spoke to me."
