From Last To First Wayne and Kristen Matlock Repeat A Double Victory In San Felipe By Dan Sanchez Photos by Get Some Photo The San Felipe 250 was a key race for those side-by-side racers wanting a good position for the SCORE Baja 500. Veteran racers who were serious about pulling off a championship and winning the SCORE Baja 500, made sure they were at the starting line and fought hard for position. Top competitors in the Pro UTV FI class such as Wayne Matlock, Mike Cafro, Mark Burnett, and Alonzo Lopez, started in the dust of all the race vehicles ahead of them. Matlock stared dead last at the rear of the 21 starters and drove by the competition to ultimately win the class and the Pro UTV Overall. “That was the toughest course I’ve ever done,” said Matlock. “I haven’t been sore from a race in a long time.” Matlock was challenged by Mike Cafro early on in the race. Both racers had Polaris RZR XP4 Turbos equipped with four-wheel drive and the advantage was clear. “We could get through many areas better than others with four-wheel drive,” said Cafro. “We had a great race.” Cafro and Matlock seemed to pull away from the other racers and exchanged the lead at one point in the race. Matlock took the lead back and held onto it until the finish line. While Cafro finished second in class, Marc Burnett also ran a good race to finish in third, despite fixing an axle problem, making up time on the course. Both Burnett and Matlock drove the SCORE San Felipe 250 solo, while Cafro was aided by co-driver Jamie Kirkpatrick. In the Pro UTV N/A class, it was all about Kristen Matlock driving solo in her Polaris RZR XP4 1000. She was gunning for an overall class win but had problems after losing the power steering in the vehicle. “My hands will never be the same,” said Matlock. “We earned our champagne today!” Despite also starting in last place and driving almost 250 miles without power steering, she managed to finish first in her class ahead of most of the competitors in the entire UTV division. The two-class win was a repeat for the Matlock’s who won their respective classes at last year’s race. Jesus Mendez Jr. entered the SCORE San Felipe 250 as the reigning pro-UTV Unlimited Champion but was not able to hold off Josh Herzing who took the class win. Herzing in his number 1877 Polaris RZR XPT 1000 co-drove with Zach Johnson. Mendez Jr. co-drove with Francisco, Pimentel and Jesus Mendez Sr. in their number 1850 Can-Am Maverick XRS. SJ
