mens basketball: news and notes vertime sharing sparks big victory BY STACY CLARDIE SClardie@GoldandBlack.com moved at Purdues offensevictory over an efficient, crisp clip for much of its 74-43 Northwestern in its only game last week, a credit to the teams focus during the bye. The Boilermakers worked daily against the varying defenses theyd see from the Wildcats and showed uncharacteristic patience to make the extra pass to get open looks. Purdues 18 assists were its most during Big Ten play and the most since Game 3 when it had 19. It recorded assists on 67 percent of its baskets, tying for its second-highest percentage during league play. In the first meeting against Northwestern, the Boilermakers assisted on 70 percent of their baskets. We did a good job of passing the ball, moving it, said D.J. season when Purdue had a season-high 21 assists against Hofstra on Nov. 11. Even when the shot clock started winding down, Purdue stayed poised and continued to run its offense, instead of one player putting his head down and charging to the rim, a common sight this year. We actually worked the ball around, said guard Terone Johnson, who had three assists. Sometimes we got down to 5 on the shot clock, and after a drive, people kicked it out. Those rhythm shots are good for us. Link t purdu o 2012-1es seaso 3 statsn Making a change Tom Campbell Sandi Marcius got the start in place of freshman A.J. Hammons, the move made by Coach Matt Painter in part to reward Marcius recent effort but also to try to inspire Hammons. Byrd, who led the team with his season-high five assists. We drove it when the time was right. We kicked it when the time was right. Most of the time youre going to get high-percentage shots when you do that. It wasnt just Byrd sharing the basketball. Five players handed out at least three assists. Thatd happened only one other time this With some frustration mounting over big man A.J. Hammons lack of consistency, Coach Matt Painter made a switch to the starting lineup vs. Northwestern: Sandi Marcius in, Hammons out. And not only that, but Hammons played a season-low-tying 12 minutes in the blowout. Part of the decision, too, was to reward Marcius for exhibiting hustle, toughness and effort the week prior. But just as much may have been to try to a light a fire under Hammons, arguably the teams best player. I thought in the last couple games, (Hammons) just didnt play as hard as Sandi did. Sandi came in, especially in the Indiana game, and he played hard, Painter said. Weve got to get (Hammons) to understand how important it is on a daily basis. Hes trying to play hard on (game days). Youve got to play hard every single day. Marcius made two of his 2012-13 MENS BASKETBALL SCHEDULE Date Game Time/ResultTV Oct. 30 MONTEVALLO (exhibition) W, 70-61 BTN Digital Nov. 3 NEWBERRY (exhibition) W, 109-68 BTN Digital Nov. 9 BUCKNELL* L, 65-70 BTN Digital Nov. 11 HOFSTRA* W, 83-54 BTN Digital Nov. 15 vs. Villanova# L, 81-89 (OT) ESPN2 Nov. 16 vs. Oregon State# L, 58-66 ESPNU/ESPN2 Nov. 21 UNC-WILMINGTON W, 66-40 BTN Nov. 28 at Clemson!
