JUNE/JULY 2019 D I G I T A L E X C L U S I V E USAHOCKEYMAGAZINE.COM // 15 COLLEGE SUN DEVILS TO BREAK BARRIERS IN BEIJING k The Arizona State University Sun Devils will become the first NCAA hock- ey program to travel to Beijing as part of a two-week cultural exchange in early August that will include several games as well as a youth clinic. The Sun Devils will play the Kunlun Red Star of the Kontinental Hockey League as well as the Chinese Olympic Team. Details of a third game are in the works. "Our program is very fortunate to have this opportunity to represent Arizona State University and NCAA hockey in China," said head coach Greg Powers. "Our student-athletes will not only have the chance to play elite teams but will also encounter once-in-a-lifetime cul- tural experiences, so we're extremely excited and grateful." Powers and the ASU coaching staff will also participate in a youth clinic during the second week, which China will dub Chinese Hockey Education Week. The Sun Devils roster features one of just three Chinese-born players at the Div. I level in redshirt freshman Peter Zhong, who grew up learning the game in Beijing. Zhong will face off against his ASU teammates when he suits up with the Chinese National Team. The trip is part of continued efforts to promote the sport in advance of the 2022 Olympic Winter Games coming to Beijing. The NHL launched its China Games Series in 2017 with an exhibition between the Los Angeles Kings and Vancouver Canucks and has plans to expand the yearly series for next eight years.
