56 ■ THE WOLFPACKER WOLFPACK FOOTBALL nagging injuries. The 5-11, 235-pounder played in every game and proved to be a workhorse for the Wolfpack. The NC State offense finished with 483 rushing attempts and 496 passing attempts last year, for nearly a 50/50 split. A healthy Ricky Person Jr., a sophomore, a slimmed- down redshirt freshman Trent Pennix and three freshmen will be tasked with continu- ing that balance. Doeren pointed out that Boston College star running back AJ Dillon might get 25- plus carries a game, but that most teams are using the committee approach. "I think it's the deepest group that I've had," the coach continued. "We have five guys back there that can play. "There are more reps happening now than there used to be, where everyone used to huddle on both sides of the football. The game was shorter and it was different. You are getting 70 to 80 plays a game on both sides of the football now." Person, who underwent surgery for a la- brum injury, is 100 percent healthy, and hopes to show why he was a dominant three-down running back at Wake Forest (N.C.) Heritage High his senior year, when he totaled 2,509 yards and 41 touchdowns from scrimmage. Person gutted out nine games last year in his debut, rushing 112 times for 471 yards and two touchdowns. His injury issues dur- ing fall camp dashed any hopes of a healthy campaign, but he still finished third on the team with 18 explosive plays (all rushes of 10 or more yards). NC State has had three different running backs rush for 1,000 yards the last three years — Matthew Dayes (2016), Nyheim Hines (2017) and Gallaspy last year — and a healthy Person could have the tools to continue that streak. "He had a postseason repair and we were taking time with the protocol," Doeren said. "He had a lot of [injuries] from when he got here, from his wrist to his hamstring to his hip. 2019 Schedule Date Opponent (TV) Time (ET) Aug. 31 East Carolina (ACCN) 12 p.m. Sept. 7 Western Carolina (RSN) 12:30 p.m. Sept. 14 at West Virginia (FS1) 12 p.m. Sept. 21 Ball State TBA Sept. 28 at Florida State TBA Oct. 10 Syracuse (ESPN) 8 p.m. Oct. 19 at Boston College TBA Nov. 2 at Wake Forest TBA Nov. 9 Clemson TBA Nov. 16 Louisville TBA Nov. 21 at Georgia Tech (ESPN) 8 p.m. Nov. 30 North Carolina TBA ■ Projected 2019 NC State Depth Chart OFFENSE Pos.
