68 ■ THE WOLFPACKER BY JACEY ZEMBAL T he Wolfpack entered the 2018 NCAA Championships with mo- mentum, having won the ACC crown and the NCAA South- east Regional, and was hoping for a top-10 finish. It did not happen, with NC State placing 13th. Veteran head coach Laurie Henes will build around her talented senior daughter Elly Henes and redshirt junior Dominique Clairmonte. Coach Henes knows her squad will be aiming for a better showing in 2019. "They weren't happy, not at all," Henes said. "I think we dealt with some things like losing Ryen Frazier early in the season, but the people who ran stepped up, particularly at the ACCs and at regionals. "We just were a little under-prepared at nationals with the people who hadn't been there before." NC State also returns sophomores Heather Holt, Savannah Shaw and Nevada Mareno, and junior Isabel Zimmermann from last year's nucleus. However, Mareno is coming off an injury from track season. "I think the returning experience will be a real advantage this year," Coach Henes said. "They've built up a little bit of that experi- ence, and that will be a big factor for the younger athletes. WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY PREVIEW Senior Elly Henes was NC State's top finisher in every meet last fall, including a 16th-place show- ing at the NCAA Championships that earned her All-America honors for the second time in her career.
