S t a n d o u t P e r f o r m e r s : N o t re Dame's ground game led by Jones, whose six runs included scampers of 12, 43, 11, 14 and 10 yards during this 15-minute period. He finished the first half with 12 carries for 120 yards, with seven of the attempts for 95 yards oc- curring in the second quarter. Sophomore wide receiver Braden Lenzy then showcased his game- breaking speed on a 51-yard reverse for a touchdown with 4:51 left until halftime to extend the Irish lead to 14-3. Notre Dame's ground game in the quarter netted 156 yards on 11 carries. Stats: USC's 37 first-half plays net- ted 146 yards, 74 yards on 10-of-17 passing and 20 carries for 72 yards. Notre Dame totaled 289 yards in the first half, with 17 rushing attempts amassing 196 yards and Book com- pleting 10 of 19 throws for 93 yards. Notes: Notre Dame started at its 3- and 20-yard lines on the back-to-back touchdown drives … Senior defensive end Khalid Kareem sacked Slovis for a 12-yard loss to help set up Notre Dame at its 44-yard line after a 37-yard punt with 3:04 left … That led to a 29-yard drive that was culminated with a then career-long 45-yard field goal by Do- erer with 15 seconds remaining. THIRD QUARTER: NOTRE DAME, 20-13 Top Moment: Trailing 20-6, USC drove 62 yards in five plays, with St. Brown making a superb one- handed catch in stride on a 38-yard post route for the touchdown with 2:34 left to pull within 20-13. The drive began when the Trojans forced an incomplete pass by Book on fourth-and-five from USC's 38- yard line at the 4:28 mark. It was the first touchdown yielded by Notre Dame this year in the third quarter. Standout Performer: Doerer 's 52-yard field goal to conclude the opening Irish drive in the second half gave Notre Dame its largest advan- tage at 20-3. Stats: USC's 274 yards on 52 plays through three quarters came via 158 passing (16 of 25) and 116 rushing on 27 carries. Notre Dame ran 60 plays for 381 yards, rushing for 242 yards
