Making hockey affordable has become a popular trend, including at the StarCenter. The facility runs a num- ber of free programs and provides kids with equipment and instruction. "It's a great, low-investment way to see if they're interested in playing hockey," Lee said. Though the facility is relatively new, young kids interested in playing hockey have come out in high numbers. This past September, more than 100 kids registered for StarCenter-Mansfield's Learn to Play rookie program. In fact, numbers seem to stay near that 100 in every age group. With the booming numbers at Mansfield, it's easy to see the rink has given more hockey players the chance to try the sport in the southern part of the Metroplex. It's just another step in the Dallas Stars' effort to grow the game. "It's bigger than just getting them on the ice," Lee concluded. "We want to educate them and get them used to the rink. This model is doing wonders here."
