The sophisticated expansion combines hospital-based services offered in Salem and at Union Hospital (Lynn) into a single facility to meet the more specialized needs of patient care. Both are members of the Partners HealthCare system. With its medical staff of 4,607, including 547 active medical staff physicians and 182 allied health personnel—physician's assistants, nurse practitioners, and others—NSMC has consolidated most services in Salem to meet the growing needs of the communities it serves. The campus opened last September, the culmination of 10 years of planning. NSMC president David J. Roberts says, "We're a community resource for people of the North Shore. We need to respond to what they need and that includes additional emergency and psychiatric care." That a seismic shift has occurred during the last decade in healthcare in the United States, both in treatments and in their delivery, is undeniable. Reforms and market forces are changing the way care is managed, due in part to the rise in patients' needs and expectations. Then, too, technological innovation strives to improve patient care and experience. In 2007 the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) developed a framework for healthcare systems to optimize performance. Since then, the Triple Aim—better care, better health, and lower costs—has guided healthcare management. Also trending is a movement to shore up community- based access, making care more readily available to a bigger population with improved patient outcomes.
