60 APRIL 2020 I N - D E P T H Leading Ladies is on a mission to enourage women to use their voices through voting. nonprofits. A light dinner and childcare are provided. Leading Ladies holds periodic organizational meetings where they plan strategy and events; 15 to 30 people attend. Sara Stanley, executive director of Healing Abuse Working for Change (HAWC), an agency that offers services to domestic violence victims, is an active member of Leading Ladies. "Women's voices are critical to ensuring that public policy reflects the needs of women and children in our country," Stanley says. "Leading Ladies seeks to empower every woman to use her voice through nonpartisan voter registration and education. When women vote, greater equity, inclusion, and innovation are the results." One Leading Ladies member is Giseli Cruz-Nascimento of Gloucester, a manager of the decorating department at Waters & Brown in Beverly. She and her husband emigrated from Brazil 27 years ago. "In Brazil, citizens are obligated to vote," Cruz-Nascimento says. "I'm a firm believer in voting. So many fought for voting rights, and it's our civil obligation to exercise this privilege." Ultimately, Leading Ladies hopes that as more people, particularly women, are informed about voting, more social ills will be addressed. It is a grassroots effort that the Leading Ladies membership believes has the potential to flourish. "We are hoping to encourage Massachusetts women to share our materials with friends and relatives in other states, so that we can encourage voting across the country among women," says Melden. "Once they are informed about the issues, they will feel compelled to vote about issues that have an impact on their families and the future of the planet. Voting is our super-power."
