Construction phase Now that all of the nuts and bolts have been taken care of, it's time to get to the build. Most construction companies use 2D plans for this phase of the project because they are easy to read in the field, required by most permitting departments, and are the basis of the contract. SketchUp LayOut is a great tool for 2D drawings and plans because it creates 2D drawings directly from your 3D model. When you make changes to the SketchUp model, the changes are reflected in LayOut. This eliminates potential errors when moving from 3D to 2D. Though, some companies are taking it a step further and are bringing their 3D models out to the field. For example, on some construction sites, the architect and construction manager will bring out big screens or digital viewing devices for the people in the field. In addition, Trimble Connect allows full 3D models to be combined, viewed, and interrogated on devices such as phones and tablets. When real-time changes happen, everyone in the field (and in the office) sees them instantly instead of relying on another 2D plan to be printed or mocked up. This can save a tremendous amount of time and greatly reduces the chance of costly errors. Trimble Field Link and Robotic Total Stations can also use SketchUp 3D models directly in the field to pinpoint exactly where items are to be installed using a visible laser pointer or traditional survey prism and pole. These easy to learn survey tools ensure designs are taken directly / 8
