USICERINKS.COM MAY.JUNE.2020 / 23 Making It A Home For All The facility's final touches were finished off in early 2020, with the official open- ing of the building Feb. 29. There are still some things left to do, including the construction of the city's first turf fields, which will be on the ground of the old Robert Crown Community Center. While the facility sits shiny and brand new, much of its usage was put on hold with the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the facility is still being used. The center has transformed itself into a command center during the outbreak and is the spot where kids in the community go for their free breakfast and lunch during this time of distance learning. Whenever the facility is allowed to be used at its normal capacity, the plans of what's going to happen there continue to grow and grow. Aside from plenty of hockey games and books being checked out at the library, more programming is in the works for this facility. The list of ideas is constantly changing, but for now, there's a lot there to help those underserved in Evanston. Some of the programming includes job training, English lessons and more thanks to the help of nearby Northwestern University's education and social policy programming. It all comes with the opportunities pro- vided by the facility that took such hard work to get done. "We have a center unlike any other," Giangreco said. "It's a true community center. A parent can drop their kid off at preschool or skating practice while they go to the library and get job training." J "YOU DON'T SEE MANY CIVIC PROJECTS WHERE THE CITIZENS OF THE COMMUNITY PUT THIS THING ON THEIR SHOULDERS AND CARRY IT ACROSS THE FINISH LINE." apply.gogc.com Make the play... with financing that's right for your rink.
