Organizations are increasingly adopting Value Stream Management (VSM) to gain a unified view of their end-to-end software development and delivery lifecycle so they can optimize processes, minimize waste, provide visibility to stakeholders, and ultimately deliver greater business value to customers. Forrester surveyed IT and Business Professionals involved in software development and delivery to understand the state of their VSM initiatives. Here are some of the key challenges, results and learnings. WHAT IS VSM? VSM is a combination of people, process, and technology that maps, optimizes, visualizes, and governs business value flow (including epics, stories, work items) through software delivery pipelines from idea through development and into production. CHALLENGES INHIBITING VALUE DELIVERY 53% of respondents consider a variety of these software capabilities important to their value delivery efforts: 40% or less say that their organization excels in any one of these areas While a high degree of automation, collaboration, and visibility are sorely needed to support value delivery, many organizations struggle to develop these interdependent competencies because: Poorly integrated toolchains contribute to islands of automation Organizational and metrics misalignment raise collaboration challenges Improper workstream management leads to fragmented visibility Where's The "Value" In Your Value Stream? of enterprises report interest, near-terms plans, or current adoption of VSM VSM IS ALREADY MAKING AN IMPACT FOR EARLY ADOPTERS Simply beginning the VSM journey has helped early adopters move the needle on key software objectives. A focus on unifying VSM strategy and technology solutions, in that order, can help organizations realize even more value from VSM. 79% 52% Map and analyze value streams +27% 78% 55% Visualize value streams +23% 76% 58% Govern value streams +18% VSM users Nonusers Only 28% have identified the right KPIs to measure business value delivered or shifted from a project to a product orientation. Fewer than a third of VSM users have implemented strategy initiatives that can boost VSM's success rate: assigned a champion, aligned data from customers with strategic priorities, or mapped data flow through their entire toolchain. VSM users are twice as likely than nonusers to have a complete picture of software development/delivery work status at the product, portfolio, and enterprise levels 2X VSM users most often depend on a collection of tools to support VSM and nearly a third are relying entirely on manual tools. Just 12% have a solution from a single vendor that they consider to be holistic. VSM users with well-integrated and comprehensive solutions report the highest level of satisfaction.
