"We [too] pride ourselves on being leaders in the law enforcement community," says Undersheriff Jason Goins. "It's important for us to be on the cutting edge when it comes to utilizing tools that improve safety, transparency, and our ability to serve the citizens of Merced County." With Fleet 2, the agency valued the ability to centralize their in-car video alongside the rest of their digital evidence. With other sharing features that allowed them to easily collaborate with partner agencies or prosecutors, they also saved time and were able to divert personnel resources to other agency priorities. They are relieved knowing that the cloud-based nature of their solution means they will always have the most up-to-date technology available to their deputies and their community. / PROVING VALUE ALMOST OVERNIGHT After deploying Fleet 2, the agency experienced two incidents within short succession where Fleet 2 played a critical role. In the first case, a review of footage from Fleet 2's interior camera showed that a felony prisoner had hidden narcotics while seated in the back. Program admins were able to review the footage with enough time to stop the drugs from making their way into the jail system, after the prisoner had already passed the typical screening process. / BUILDING ON A PARTNERSHIP The Merced County Sheriff's Office has worked with Axon for over 18 years, beginning with TASER devices being deployed among deputies and correctional officers back in 2002. They first began using Axon's video solutions in 2016, deploying Axon Body 2 cameras to patrol deputies and eventually to all correctional staff. Their CEW and BWC programs were so successful that when it came time to choose a new in-car video system in late 2019, Axon Fleet 2 quickly became the clear choice. "With the experiences we already had with Axon body cameras and the use of Axon Evidence [Evidence. com], Axon Fleet was a no-brainer," says Lieutenant Chuck Hale, who has helped spearhead Axon technology implementation.
