However, according to a recent 451 Research survey, 80% of enterprises believe IT is becoming harder to manage, and the challenges more severe. The problem is likely to become even worse as enterprises plan to deploy a variety of disruptive technologies over the next 24 months – including automation, artificial intelligence, cloud, 5G, IoT and location-based technologies. This is concerning considering that over 75% of enterprises believe that operating and maintaining existing IT is already consuming too much of their time. IT teams are facing various challenges. At the top of the list are conflicting projects and priorities, budget constraints, lack of agility, and the velocity of digital transformation and technology change. Enterprises are adopting new technologies faster than their employees (and IT staff) can adapt. This is leading to a severe IT skills shortage. Not only are IT teams lacking the right talent and expertise, but they often lack enough staff to tackle the sheer volume of work demanded by the business. (n=807) Finding the right employees can be difficult, especially in specialized areas where the salaries for in-demand technical staff are skyrocketing. Unfortunately, the current downshift of the global economy amid the pandemic will likely only exacerbate the problem. In 451 Research's Coronavirus Flash Survey in March, over 78% of enterprises said the pandemic had already negatively impacted their operations, and almost 40% said they expect to experience a major disruption to their business if it continued for longer than three months. As enterprises look to deliver more modern, flexible IT services, they cannot maintain the status quo when it comes to talent. They will need to address the skills gap with a deeper bench of expertise to achieve their business objectives, stay competitive, and realize the full benefits of a digital landscape that spans networks, clouds and geographies.
