18 ■ THE WOLFPACKER TRACKING THE PACK G rant Gibson was a member of a three- time 4AA state champion football team at Mallard Creek High in Charlotte, N.C. The No. 19 defensive tackle nation- ally in the 2017 class according to Rivals. com ended up finding his place on the other side of the line with the Wolfpack. Gibson played both center on the offen- sive line and tackle on the defensive line in high school, so it was a natural transition for the 6-1, 305-pounder to take over as the starting center for NC State in 2019. The winner of the team's Mike Hardy Award for exhibiting a winning attitude, Gibson was the only player on offense to start in every game for the Pack in 2019. Gibson spoke with The Wolfpacker to discuss his transition to center last season and what he brings to NC State. You were recruited as a defensive tackle out of high school. What was it like tran- sitioning to the offensive line? "When I was moved over to the offen- sive line, I hadn't played it in two years. It took me about two weeks to get back to my offensive line play. It was more about learning the plays. "I really tried to learn from [former NC State center] Garrett Bradbury and echo what he was doing." You snapped for three different starting quarterbacks last season. How much does it change from quarterback to quarterback when it comes to place- GETTING TO KNOW: Gibson was the only player on offense to start in every game for the Wolfpack in 2019.
