TIPS TO MAKE THE PROCESS EASIER How to Prepare for a Background Check Due to ever-changing hiring needs, many people are applying for jobs, perhaps for the first time (or the first time in a long time). So, it might come as a shock when their prospective employer requires a pre-employment background check. To ensure a smooth process, here are some things a candidate can do to get ready for their check. Keep in mind: these tips are for a basic background screening. Depending on the role and industry, other searches might be added such as sanctions, drug and health testing, motor vehicle records and credit checks, and these may require additional documents. 1. Have your documents ready. • Identification - your driver's license, ID or passport • Government-issued IDs such as a U.S. passport, military ID, state-issued photo ID, birth certificate, Permanent Resident/Alien Registration Receipt Card, etc. • SSN card • Employment history (company name, address, phone number of past employers, dates of employment and positions held). Sometimes past pay stubs or W-2s are acceptable. • Address History - gather all of the addresses where you have lived. • Education verification – institution name, location (city/state or country) degree received, date(s) degree received and major. 2. Be prepared to discuss employment gaps. An employment gap on a resume doesn't automatically mean a candidate won't move to the next step. But the hiring company will often ask about the gaps, voluntary or involuntary, so a candidate should be prepared to discuss them. 3. Consider the various social media profiles. Make sure your social media profiles and posts reflect your best self and fitness for the role. Employers might take into hiring consideration negative posts with serious negative impact, including bigotry (racist, sexist, or discriminatory behavior), threats or acts of violence, sexually explicit material or potentially illegal activity. connect @ P. 1.800.784.3911 E.
