CUSTOMER CASE STUDY Ad Astra creates an insights-driven culture Company: Location: Industry: Employees: Product: Use Case: Website: Ad Astra Overland Park, KS Higher Education Software 200 Matillion ETL for Amazon Redshift Cloud Data Warehouse, Data Transformation About Ad Astra Ad Astra is a leading provider of higher education scheduling software and consulting services. Founded in 1996, the business provides solutions that transform data into critical business intelligence, helping institutions make better decisions on enrollment management, course offerings, and classroom and faculty scheduling and capacity. The Challenge Addressing challenges with ETL processes Since it was founded, Ad Astra has partnered with more than 1,000 higher learning institutions to use data to help improve stewardship of instructional resources, increase access to courses, and accelerate student progression. When it engages with a new customer, Ad Astra must quickly get access to the customer's data and transform it into the correct format for Ad Astra's scheduling and predictive software. But the company struggled with its ETL processes. Its data flows were essentially a "black box." Data went in and results came out, but employees had little insight into where data was coming from or how it was being manipulated. Only developers had access to the entire data pipeline, which increased dependency on development teams. To continue delivering vital business intelligence to its customers, Ad Astra needed an ETL solution that would increase visibility into its data flows. The Solution Faster data transformation After considering several ETL solutions, Ad Astra chose Matillion ETL for Amazon Redshift. The company was able to deploy Matillion on its own quickly and easily, directly into the Ad Astra cloud environment. The Matillion solution's drag-and-drop user interface enabled the Ad Astra data team, including integration engineers, data consultants, BI analysts, and technical support staff, to get up to speed on the product and begin using it right away. By combining Matillion ETL and the Amazon Redshift cloud data warehouse, Ad Astra can transform its data into the correct format for its software much faster than it could in the past, in about 45 minutes rather than up to 8 hours. And that means the company can begin delivering business insights to its customers faster as well. And because the data never leaves the cloud environment, it remains secure. Matillion ETL has helped transform Ad Astra's culture around data. The product was fast and easy to implement and it allows our engineering staff to spend their time creating innovative new product features instead of managing ETL processes. © 2020 Matillion.
