With reduced ice time this summer, parents across youth hockey have been tasked with creating a less than traditional, hybrid development environment for their children – all while still preparing to get a jump start on the competition next season. The Hockey IntelliGym, an at- home software-based hockey-sense trainer, con- tinues to serve as the central cognitive tool for tens-of- thousands of hockey players. Players and coaches have found that with just two 30-minute sessions a week, The Hockey IntelliGym has provided an opportunity to supplement on-ice training and build cognitive development skills that will benefit them as they return to the ice. Parents too have found The Hockey IntelliGym to be a great means of motivation as their children prepare for the season ahead. "My 14-year-old daughter has missed her hockey camp and practices so much in 2020. Discovering The Hockey IntelliGym and its computer training filled some of the void and kept her motivated," said Clair L., 14U youth hockey parent. USA Hockey, in collaboration with Applied Cognitive Engineering, created the Hockey IntelliGym in 2009. It was originally developed by cognitive psychologists, computer engineers, and game theorists to develop precise instincts in military fighter pilots. Resembling a video game with cog- nitive scenarios similar to what players will experience on the ice, the IntelliGym trains the decision-making skills nec- essary to stay one step ahead of the puck and the game. "The developments over the past number of months have created a unique opportunity to hone in on the mental side of the game. The Hockey IntelliGym cannot replace what is done on the ice, but that's not the goal. The goal is to augment that training off the ice, as kids can only play so much," says Ken Martel, technical direc- tor of the American Development Model for USA Hockey.
