INSIDE A
SCOUT'S NOTEBOOK
EVER WONDER what recruiters are scribbling down as they
watch prospects play? A dozen NCAA assistant coaches
gave us a peek at their notes. Below, with a fictitious team,
are some of the things they are watching.
Colleges can't
recruit players
who have signed
with or played
for a major
junior team
A
coach might note a
player he wants to watch
for different reasons,
including recommendation
by a coach or the player
has expressed an
interest in the
school.
Several
coaches told us
they track signs of
hockey sense:
one uses (+) or (-)
for good or
bad plays.
Coaches
want to note
who the
leaders of a
team are.
An obnoxious
parent can get a
kid crossed off,
even if the coach
likes them.
Scouts
will typically ask
a coach for his
thoughts on
players to
watch.
If a scout
likes a player
the coach hasn't
mentioned, the
scout is likely to
follow up to
see why.
Several
coaches said
they track battles
won or lost, this
one with a (B+)
or (B-)
Among the topics
tracked for goalies:
• Rebound Control (R+) (R-)
• Hockey Sense (+) (-)
• Skating (S+) (S-)
Scouts won't
waste time
watching player
whose grades
aren't good
enough.
Scouts want
to see what
players a coach
trusts in key
situations like
special teams.
