www.BLUEANDGOLD.com NOV. 27, 2020 13 UNDER THE DOME 100 Years Ago: Nov. 20-25 In what would be his final college game, George Gipp completes 5 of 6 passes for 157 yards with touch- down passes of 35 yards to Eddie Anderson and 55 to Norm Barry in a 33-7 defeat of Northwestern. Five days later on Thanksgiving, minus an ailing Gipp who had checked into nearby St. Joseph's Hospi- tal, Notre Dame concludes its second straight 9-0 campaign with a 25-0 victory at Michigan Agricultural College (later Michigan State). 90 Years Ago: Nov. 22-29 At Evanston, Ill., versus Northwestern (Nov. 22) and at Chicago's Soldier Field against Army (Nov. 29), reigning national champion Notre Dame's 16- and then 17-game winning streak are in jeopardy with scoreless affairs entering the fourth quarter. Future College Football Hall of Fame running back Marchy Schwartz breaks the drought versus the Wildcats with a 28-yard touchdown run in a 14-0 victory. A week later in front of an estimated 110,000 (paid attendance at 103,310), Schwartz dashes for a 54-yard touchdown, and Frank Carideo kicks the extra point for a 7-0 lead. That point after would prove crucial when a Carideo punt is blocked and re- covered in the end zone by Army with 3:30 remaining — but the drop kick for the point after is blocked. 50 Years Ago: Nov. 21, 1970 Despite two future NFL MVPs — Notre Dame's Joe Theis- mann and LSU's Bert Jones — playing at quarterback, this battle between No. 2 Notre Dame and No. 7 and SEC champ LSU results in a 3-0 slugfest won by the Fighting Irish. The win- ning score doesn't occur until 2:54 is left in the contest on a 24-yard field goal by Scott Hempel. The Irish total merely 227 yards of offense, but LSU accumu- lates only 165, while Notre Dame defensive end Walt Patulski is credited with eight tackles behind the line of scrimmage for minus-42 yards. Also, early in the fourth quarter, Notre Dame's Bob Neidert blocks LSU's 25-yard field-goal attempt. A week later at USC, Theismann finishes with a school-record 526 passing yards (still the standard), but eight Irish turnovers compared to zero for USC result in a 38-28 defeat. 40 Years Ago: Nov. 22, 1980 In head coach Dan Devine's final home game, No. 2-ranked Notre Dame sets a school record by not allowing a touchdown through 23 straight quarters — a stan- dard that remains — while defeating Air Force 24-10. The defense, led by All-Americans Scott Zettek at end and Bob Crable at linebacker, allows its first touchdown in six games during the fourth quarter. Irish tailback Phil Carter rushes for 181 yards on 29 carries. After the game, the Irish accept a bid to play No. 1 Georgia in the Sugar Bowl. Three days later, with Notre Dame in a bye week before playing at USC Dec. 6. Cincinnati Archbishop Moeller head coach Gerry Faust is announced as the successor to Devine. 35 Years Ago: Nov. 26-27, 1985 Three days after losing at home to LSU (10-7) to drop to 5-5 on the year and 30-25-1 overall, Faust announces at his Nov. 26 press conference he is resigning from his Notre Dame head coaching position after the upcoming game at No. 4 Miami. Just one day later, the day before Thanksgiving, Minnesota second-year head coach Louis Leo Holtz is introduced as Faust's successor. A college or NFL head coach for 16 years, Holtz led North Carolina State to its first top-10 finish in 1974, and Arkansas to four top-10 finishes from 1977-82. 10 Years Ago: Nov. 27, 2010 Under first-year head coach Brian Kelly, Notre Dame ends the regular season with three straight victories and a 7-5 finish with freshman Tommy Rees at quarterback. Most significant, the Irish rally to a 20-16 victory at USC in the rain to snap a record eight-game losing streak to the Trojans. Running back Robert Hughes' five-yard scoring run with 2:23 caps a 77-yard march that begin with Cierre Wood nearly losing a fumble after a 26-yard jaunt, and Hughes adding six-, 12- and 13-yard runs before his tally. — Lou Somogyi Anniversaries In Notre Dame Football History: Nov. 16-29 D e f e n s i v e e n d W a l t P a t u l s k i recorded eight tackles behind the line of scrimmage for minus- 42 yards to help the Fighting Irish defeat LSU 3-0 in 1970.
