28 NOV. 27, 2020 BLUE & GOLD ILLUSTRATED and his ability to make plays with his arm and legs. The 6-5, 226-pound junior didn't have an overly efficient game, com- pleting just 45.0 percent of his passes, but he still produced 306 yards of total offense and repeatedly gashed Notre Dame with big plays. On 10 different occasions, Jurkovec picked up more than 15 yards, among them passes of 34 and 40 yards. While Jurkovec certainly made some plays, a lot of his production came off of Notre Dame mistakes or occurred in instances where Irish de- fenders appeared sluggish. After the game, Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly said he was happy his team didn't play the following weekend. "We looked a little tired on de- fense," Kelly said. "This bye week is coming at a good time for us to get some guys back and healthy. " Prior to the game it was revealed that junior backup defensive tackle Jayson Ademilola had undergone meniscus surgery earlier in the week. Kelly expressed hope that Ademilola might be ready for the Dec. 5 Syra- cuse game. One issue was Notre Dame's lack of a pass rush. Coming into the con- test, the Eagles were allowing nearly three sacks per game, but against the Irish, Jurkovec was sacked only once. It was by sixth-year senior safety Shaun Crawford coming off the edge on a blitz. "We've got to work on our stan- dard on defense, and continue to get back on the grind," fifth-year senior defensive end and team captain Ade Ogundeji said. "For Phil, I said [to him after the game] good job through- out the game, that we miss him and he played a hell of a game." ✦ BOSTON COLLEGE VS. The instant takeaway is, 'What could have been?' This really could have been one of those crazy Boston College scenarios. The onside kick stands out. We got a little lucky there." • "In the second half, you saw Notre Dame fix its leaks and dominate, but if a couple balls bounce differently, we could be talking about a loss. If Boston College had a few breaks go their way, who knows what could have happened." Join us after every game for the Live Show on YouTube! BlueandGold.com's Mike Singer and former Fighting Irish captain and linebacker Mike Goolsby will recap the game and give their instant analysis. www.youtube.com/c/bluegoldillustrated Notre Dame's defense sacked Boston College quarterback Phil Jurkovec only once. PHOTO COURTESY NOTRE DAME ATHLETICS IRISH LOSE A LEGEND Paul Hornung, Notre Dame's 1956 Heisman Trophy winner known as the "Golden Boy," died Nov. 13 at the age of 84. An Irish legend, he is one of only six Notre Dame players enshrined in both the College and Pro Football Halls of Fame. But what he may be most famous for is being the lone Heisman Trophy recipient to win the award on a losing team (2-8). Hornung died after Blue & Gold Illustrated had sent most of this edition to print on Friday afternoon, Nov. 13. BGI will devote a spread to Hornung in the next edition of the publication, which pub- lishes following the North Carolina game on Nov. 27.
