Fredenburgh was one of the founders of the muse- um in 1961 and a veteran of the WWI. He was born in 1895 and died in 1964 after a lifetime in West- port. He joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force in February 1916 with the 156th (Leeds and Grenville) Overseas Bat- talion and sailed to France in May 1917, Overseas he was wounded in the battle of Passchendaele in Belgium and was eventually dis- charged in January 1919. Fredenburgh's military memorabilia became part of a number of items from one of his relative's estates which ended up for sale at a Toronto antique store in 2006. Westport native Dave Roberts by chance discov- ered the items, purchased them for over $600 and then tried to sell them in a Westport bookstore. Mary Forrester Barr's letter to The Review Mir- ror offering to pay some part of the medals sparked a fundraising campaign which was coordinated by The Review-Mirror and raised the additional $550 needed to purchase the medals. The medals now have a place of honor in the museum thanks to the gen- erosity of members of the community. Xplorenet tower proposal withdrawn A proposal to erect a 150-foot high tower in a resi- dential area near Bedford Mills has been withdrawn after neighbours voiced objections. The proposed tower, meant to broadcast an Xplorenet Internet signal, caught some neighbourhood residents off guard when they learned they had little or nothing to say about its location. The United Counties of Leeds and Grenville and Bar- rett Xplore Inc. signed an agreement in 2008 to provide coverage in areas where high-speed internet service is unavailable. Fredenburgh medals find new home The Rideau District Museum board chair Janice Steele, right, was presented with W.L. Fredenburgh's medals on Saturday at the heritage festival after a fundraising effort in the community paid for Dave Roberts, left, find in a Toronto antique store. Woody Harrington, Fredenburgh's great nephew, was on hand for the ceremony and donated a drum of Fredenburgh's which he had owned since childhood. Photo by Mar- garet Brand
