Understanding OPNFV 60 Tacker MANO In addition to these three MANO projects, Open Source MANO (OSM), originally from Telefónica and now housed under ETSI, could be integrated into OPNFV at some point. Virtualized Infrastructure Manager (VIM) The VIM is responsible for creating and managing infrastructure resources such as virtual compute and virtual storage. The VIM can work with an SDN controller (see next section) to create virtual networks. (Strictly speaking, SDN controllers are part of the VIM, but we are breaking out each of these components for the sake of clarity.) OpenStack Currently OPNFV uses OpenStack as its primary VIM. In the context of NFV: OpenStack® is open source software for managing telecommunications infrastructure for NFV, 5G, IoT and business applications. Global telecoms including AT&T, China Mobile, Orange, NTT DOCOMO and Verizon deploy OpenStack as an integration engine with APIs to orchestrate bare metal, virtual machine and container resources on a single network. OpenStack is a global community of more than 70,000 individuals across 183 countries supported by the OpenStack Foundation. Visit the Telecom and NFV page to learn more. (Source:
