Once a week, my Peewee B2 team trades back an hour of indoor practice time to play community shinny outdoors under the lights. We have created: Spartan Shinny. We are making rounds through many of our town's favorite family rinks to celebrate the game in its simplest form. The kids play 3v3, and families each week make a big splash with bonfires, music, etc. It is the perfect way to deflect the sterile nature of the current COVID rink situation. "The kids still wear full gear, masks, practice social distancing, etc. That said, playing outdoors makes them forget about many of the constraints and has helped us create an environment where kids love the game and get plenty of game-like play in. "The perfect medicine for these tough times. Oh yeah—losing teams each agree to shovel the rinks/ponds afterwards!"
