MXR-CS-GSMI 12/20 Satellites On Demand The task of strategic planning and managing support for rehabilitation efforts is a significant challenge for the Government of the Philippines and one they expect will increase. Tasking Maxar Earth imaging satellites provides a cost- efficient and timely source for critical data and assessment. GSMI also uses Maxar VHRSI in periodic comparative analysis assessing progress under rehabilitation programs and in support of budget analysis on overall estimates of the target completion of all projects. Satellite images provide remote officials an alternative means of monitoring ongoing progress of rebuilding efforts. VHRSI also supports research and planning efforts, especially related to disaster response and preparedness, utilities and environmental resources. info@maxar.com maxar.com Building resilience The Philippines, an archipelago of over 7,100 islands, is located on the "Ring of Fire," an active arc of volcanoes and fault lines in the Pacific Basin. Not only is the country subject to frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, it is also one of the most at risk countries for climate-related disasters. Areas that historically have not been at risk, and therefore less likely to prepare for disaster management, are increasingly likely to face extreme, unpredictable events. Given that 25 percent of the population lives below the national poverty level, this means that large numbers of people are unable to prepare for, cope with and recover from disasters. The Philippine Government has accordingly devoted significant resources to build disaster capacity and reduce population exposure and vulnerability, developing a set of policies and plans for disaster risk reduction, enshrined in the Philippine Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Act of 2010. The Act establishes local councils at the regional, provincial, municipal and community levels, but capacity of the various councils is varied. Councils can be understaffed or inexperienced and the NDRRMC cannot supervise all local councils. Through ongoing monitoring, risk reduction officials now have the data and tools to better identify emerging risks and prepare disaster relief responses. Through image analysis, they can identify possibilities for reducing vulnerability and assess recovery efforts. Post-image aer earthquake *Damaged/collapsed compared to pre-image
