WHITE PAPER Tackling workloads in real time with PCIe Gen 4.0 mrcy.com 3 mrcy.com 3 LOW-LATENCY IS IMPERATIVE FOR CONVERGED SENSE AND RESPONSE In most currently deployed systems, the sense-and-respond process is handled by two classes of computing. For sense, there is a rugged subsystem or server that receives the sensor data stream, handles the A/D conversion and implements some initial processing of the data, perhaps locating a radar target or identifying an EW signal of interest. Today, this rugged server is on the 'physical edge,' and typically located close to the sensor in a large platform, such as an aircraft. Another system, sometimes in a different physical location, receives this information and generates a response. As systems move to a model using sensor input from many sources and across domains, all sending data streams via 5G, the sense-and-response functions will converge to a single deployed server; it will be the most effective way to achieve a low-latency response. These servers will provide a rapidly re-configurable 'Edge Cloud' capability, shifting their function rapidly across multiple applications, from image analysis to weapons targeting. Supporting this flexibility will require an array of processing elements, with extremely high-bandwidth interconnects that can move data from any set of sensing units to any set of processing elements. Big data and 5G require low latency, high-throughput computing Compared to previous generation networks, 5G can transport data at a faster rate from its source to edge computing infrastructure. Computing systems must be optimized to move or process data rapidly to take advantage of 5G speeds and ensure application efficiency. PCIe Gen 4 doubles bandwidth throughput, enabling decision-makers to gain insights quickly, streamline joint domain communications and make rapid decisions with confidence. Maximizing Application Efficiency with a Single Rugged Server A high throughput, low latency server can manage platform communications, analyze imager y, control weapon targeting and perform other applications while receiving information at 5G speeds.
