The world's oceans are overfished at an alarming
rate, threatening food security and long-term
economic prosperity for many nations. While global
leaders acknowledge the importance of curbing
illegal fishing, there are many obstacles. It is nearly
impossible to monitor hundreds of thousands—or,
in some instances, millions—of square kilometers
of open water with manned assets alone. Adding
to the challenge, many vessels turn off their
Automatic Identification System (AIS) transceivers,
transforming into dark targets.

Maxar detects vessels using SAR imagery, including
vessels not reporting with AIS. If vessels of interest
are observed, Maxar automatically captures high-
resolution optical satellite images that provide more
clarity on the type of vessel, the activity the vessel
is engaged in and the vessel identity. This innovative
monitoring solution uses a hybrid of SAR and
optical satellite imagery, automation and customer
input to allow maritime enforcement agencies to
intervene faster and effectively manage vulnerable
fish populations.
