VOL. 49 : N o 4 : IN PRINT SINCE '73 INSIDE MAY Drip! Drip! Drip! "You don't miss your water 'til the well runs dry." That saying could not have been truer than for most of Texas back in February, after a major winter storm swept across nearly all the state's 254 counties— leaving an estimated 3 million to 4 million homes and businesses without power and running water. Throughout the state, record-setting temperatures remained below freezing for more than 10 days—in some places dropping to minus 2 degrees Fahrenheit—adding to the bitter cold. Homes and businesses that escaped the water damage caused by the horror of burst water pipes were either reduced to frozen pipes, no water at all or nothing more than a slow trickle or drip. Helpless! That's how I felt not being able to provide warmth and comfort for my family. Hopeless, because crews working in the field desperately trying to fix the problems could offer no assurance as to when power and water would be restored. Helpless and hopeless. They're the same feelings we get when we sense we've been shut off or disconnected from God—like He's not hearing our prayers, or we don't sense His presence. Instead of His love, mercy, grace and compassion flowing through to us, all we get is a slow drip! What causes that? How does the connection between our heavenly Father and us become so disrupted? It happens when we neglect spending time in fellowship with Him. In John 15:5, The Message, Jesus says, "I am the Vine, you are the branches. When you're joined with me and I with you, the relation intimate and organic, the harvest is sure to be abundant. Separated, you can't produce a thing." As the branch stays connected to the Vine, the sap, the living water of the Holy Spirit, continually flows to the branch—bringing a constant flow of life and sustenance. Gloria Copeland helps us to understand this in her article this month, titled "Abiding In the Vine." In it, she states that staying in living contact with Jesus is how we can keep the living water flowing into our lives.
