Over 30% of the population is foreign born. Nearly 600K
Australians have emigrated.
The 2016 census shows that Sydney and Melbourne had
foreign-born populations of 45% and 41% respectively.
A lack of migration due to Covid-19 will mean that Australia's
population growth will be the lowest since 1916, although
partially offset as over 400K Australians have returned since
March 2020.
The unemployment gap between foreign born and native born
populations was 0.3 percentage points in 2019.
Some states have waived requirements for Medicare to
diagnose and treat foreigners with Covid-19.
909 Covid-19 deaths.
Borders are closed to all non-residents and
Australian citizens with a few limited exceptions.
Any traveller entering Australia must quarantine
for a period of 14 days.
Local lockdowns are being implemented based
on any outbreaks.
Schools, shops and services are open.
Some restriction of travel between states.
