LB player bios Position Coaches Mark Smith is entering his third season as linebackers coach. Prior to his stint in Ann Arbor, he accumulated eight years of defensive coordinator experience at Ball State (2003-08) and Indiana State (2001-02). He has coached linebackers since 1988 and oversaw the linebacker position for Brady Hoke for two seasons at San Diego State (2009-10). Last year, the three starting linebackers finished as the top three tacklers on the team, with middle linebacker Kenny Demens and outside linebackers Jake Ryan and Desmond Morgan notching 251 total tackles. Before his stint at Ball State, Smith spent 15 seasons as an assistant coach at Indiana State. He began his coaching career as a wide receivers and secondary coach at Defiance (Ohio) High School (1979-81), and also spent time as an assistant coach at Bowling Green (1982-85) and Rose Hulman (1986-87). Roy Manning joined the Michigan staff this spring and is in his first year as outside linebackers coach. Manning's budding collegiate coaching career began in 2010, as a defensive graduate assistant at Cincinnati. He helped coach the offensive line at Michigan as a graduate assistant in 2011, Brady Hoke's first season in Ann Arbor. He got his first full-time assistant job at Cincinnati, coaching running backs for the 2012 season. When Bearcats coach Butch Jones took the Tennessee job, Manning accepted the running backs job at Northern Illinois, but he was there for just a few short weeks before Michigan called. Manning was a four-year letterman at Michigan, playing outside linebacker (2001-04). He started 10 games and played in 37. His first two years on campus coincided with Hoke's last two in Ann Arbor as an assistant coach. Western Michigan, posting two stops.
