db player bios Position Coach Curt Mallory enters his third year coaching the secondary at his alma mater. A two-year letter winner under legendary head coach Bo Schembechler and Gary Moeller (1989-90), he was a player on five Big Ten championship squads (1988-92) in Ann Arbor. Last season, the secondary ranked fifth nationally in passing defense (169.5 yards allowed per game) despite the loss of starting cornerback Blake Countess, who missed the year after tearing his ACL in the season opener. Mallory returned to Michigan in 2011 after a one-year stint as Akron's defensive coordinator (2010). He also was Illinois' co-defensive coordinator for three seasons (200709). He gained 10 years of experience coaching secondaries at Illinois (2005-09), Indiana (2002-04), Central Michigan (2001) and Ball State (2000). Mallory began his career as a student assistant at Michigan.
