D By Michael Spath evin Gardner was being practical. Understanding the time commitment of playing football, he amassed every college credit he could during fall, winter, spring and summer terms, determined to graduate on time. His plan of attack had a surprising result, however — Gardner was on track to earn his degree in April, in only 3.5 years (he was an early enrollee). Thus, the Detroit native donned a cap and gown, and stood alongside Denard Robinson, Thomas Gordon, Cam Gordon, Quinton Washington and others a year older than him at the May 4 ceremony. "When I learned I was graduating, I was amazed," said Gardner, who earned a degree in Communications and African American Studies. "I knew I had been racking up a lot of credits, but I didn't know I was this close. I just kept taking classes so that I would definitely make it in four, but I guess by doing that I overachieved." Granted a medical redshirt, and now eligible to return in 2014 if he chooses to, Gardner will enroll in grad school this fall. He has already been accepted to the School of Social Work — a dream come true for the community-minded junior — but he also interviewed with the Stephen M. Ross School of Business to discuss possible opportunities. "In the situation I grew up in, I saw a lot of people struggle, and I want to be hands on and talk to young people, especially about the choices they make," he said.
