A FULL-ON BUGGY THROW-DOWN Class 1 and Class 10 Buggies Get Shaken, Fried, And Stirred By Dan Sanchez It was obvious that during the 34th BFGoodrich Tires SCORE San Felipe 250 Presented by Ford, the next evolution of the Class 1 buggy had now come of age. With these vehicles now utilizing larger 40-inch BFGoodrich tires, more powerful engines, and new drivetrains made to handle the power, vehicles like Reid Racing’s new Aluma Craft left the other 2WD competitors feeling a bit obsolete. Before the start, qualifying sessions had Broc Dickerson in the No. 123 car with the fastest time to leave first off the starting line. Behind him was Mason Cullen in the No. 105 car, followed by the No. 100 car of 2020 Class Champion Cody Parkhouse. Shelby Reid in the No. 168 car didn’t attempt to qualify but ended up starting sixth in a field of eight. It didn’t take long for the Reid team to move up the pack and take the first place position in class, on the course. Without any major problems or a flat tire, the Reid team maintained their pace to ultimately cross the finish line first and win the class. “We had no problems with this brand new car in its very first race,” said Shelby Reid. “We did have some GPS problems, but nothing with the car.” Mason and Matt Cullen were fighting an engine misfire but managed to get past Dickerson after he had vehicle issues and maintain second place crossing the finish line. “We were fighting the engine misfire the entire race and the suspension went away a little bit on us,” he said. “We’re stoked to start in second at the SCORE Baja 500.” Finishing third was Mario Fuentes in the No. 179 car, with co-driver Arandino H. Fierro, while Alberto Varela with Roberto Romo Jr. and Abel Atayade finished fourth in the No. 132 car. Cody and Brian Parkhouse finished in fifth place, dealing with some kind of fuel issues. “We were getting terrible gas mileage and we ran out of gas,” said Cody Parkhouse. “We went down for a couple of hours out there trying to get my dad gas. Unfortunately, you can’t always be perfect, but we made it to the finish.” Battle Of The Drivers The competition is extremely high among Class 10 racers, with former class champions and multiple SCORE race winners always finishing in the top five. SCORE 2020 Class Champion Chase Warren in the No. 1088 car is one of them. For the San Felipe race, he teamed up with Martin Richardson and started 12th in a field of 23 racers. Within the first 50 miles, Warren moved up to the first position on the course, but got a flat tire soon afterward, and got passed. Working their way up, the team got out front again and with 60-miles left to the finish line, they got another flat tire and got passed again. Fortunately, they made up some time to finish second on the course, but close enough to get a better time and take the class win. Hiram Duran in the No. 1016 car finished second, with his co-drivers, Evan, Marco, and Eric Duran. The team also had a great race that was very close. Duran was only four seconds slower than Warren. Finishing third was Alberto Mendez in the No. 1019 car. This was Mendez’s first race in which he only came down to San Felipe in the past as a spectator. “This particular course was difficult,” said Mendez. “A lot of people got stuck in bottle-necks around mile 180. We almost got stuck ourselves but we made it.” SJ
