Mercury helps Boeing capture and retrieve critical flight evidence with a crash-survivable video recorder CHALLENGE Develop the first crash-survivable, EUROCAE ED-112A-qualified video recorder that allows aircraft operators to record, stream and safeguard cockpit video, audio and data. The memory must survive 115 MPa deep-sea pressures, 1,100 ° C (1 hour) and 260 ° C (10 hours) temperatures, 500 lb sharp impacts and fluid immersion. SOLUTION Engineers at Mercury designed a unique insulated shell to protect the video recorder and a formulated thermal phase change material to add a second layer of heat protection for the memory unit itself. For cost effectiveness, Mercury added upgradable, non-proprietary, commercial technologies that simplified integration and maintenance. Finally, Mercury developed and implemented video and audio compression algorithms to streamline data collection and maximize storage capacity. The resulting FAERITO ® video recorder was the first purpose-built, crash-survivable, multi-functional avionics video recorder on the market qualified to EUROCAE ED-112A, RTCA DO-160E and MIL-STD 1553 standards. RESULT During their development of an unmanned aerial vehicle, Boeing was able to use the FAERITO video recorder to gather critical crash data from test flights to improve future designs. Future FAERITO solutions will further enhance operator capabilities with removable memory modules, easily retrievable crash-survivable memory and FIPS 140-2 and NSA Type-I encryption options.
