HANGING ON FOR A WIN Four-Wheel Class Racers Do Their Best To Finish A Tough Course By Dan Sanchez, Paul Hanson, and Jose Vazquez Photos By Get Some Photo  Winning is always at the forefront of a racer’s mind as they started the 2nd SCORE Baja 400 Presented by VP Racing Fuels. But many were also having to balance between going all out for the win, saving their vehicles for a good starting position for the 54th BFGoodrich Tires SCORE Baja 1000 Presented by 4 Wheel Parts, and taking a lead towards a class championship. In many classes, this was the case, starting with Class 7 racers who were behind Jeff Proctor and the Honda Ridgeline that won the SCORE San Felipe 250 and the SCORE Baja 500 this season. With Proctor not competing at the SCORE Baja 400, 2020 Class Champion Dan Chamlee continued to be consistent, and this time, finished the race in first place. This put Chamlee and the No. 700 Ford Ranger at the top of the points race towards a potential 17th Class 7 championship. “The truck wasn’t 100-percent, but it was good enough and was making decent time,” said Chamlee. “We ended up in the front at the end where it counts.  No flats thanks to our BFGoodrich tires and King Shocks out there smoothing the bumps. Thanks to Full Throttle batteries and Rod End supply; I can’t thank these guys enough.  Amy and I were in the truck the whole time and we had one person in one chase truck. Good thing we didn’t need him. I usually just hose it off and change the oil, but in preparation for the SCORE Baja 1000 I think we will do a little more.” See more of Dan Chamlee’s stats on SCORE Fan Pages. SATTERFIELD CONSISTENT IN SCORE LITES Also running consistently, finishing at the top of the class, was Doug Satterfield in SCORE Lites. Satterfield in the No.1229 car competed against Oscar R. Alvarez in the No 1221 car, and Matias Arjona IV in the No. 1202 car. Arjona had problems and did not finish, while Satterfield and Alvarez continued on to finish first and second in class. Satterfield now takes the lead towards a class championship. SANCHEZ DOMINATES 1/2-1600 CLASS Kevin Sanchez has done well this season, finishing first at the SCORE San Felipe 250, second at the SCORE Baja 500 and finishing first at the 2nd SCORE Baja 400. He’s been battling with Eli Yee for the championship, which is still a close race as Yee finished second in class. “We had a flawless run, said Sanchez’ co-driver Fernie Padilla. “The plan was to run as hard as we could, which we did, but then we got caught up in two log jams, allowing all the other competitors to catch back up. We had a twenty-minute lead, which we lost. But I drove hard and got an eight-minute lead back up and Kevin kept up the lead. We had no issues with our BFGoodrich tires, no flats. Great run all day. The Sanchez family, here in Ensenada, they treat me like family. I drive down from Las Vegas and this is such a fun thing for me. TOUGH COMPETITION IN BAJA BUG CLASSES The traditional Baja Bugs are still made up of hardcore racers who love these vehicles enough to put themselves through a difficult race like the 2nd SCORE Baja 400. Finishing is as good as winning for most, but taking the checkered flag is better when there’s some competition after the same goal. For Class 5 racers, Greg Sullivan only needed to beat himself and finish within the allotted time to take a class win at this race. He did so, and took a commanding lead in the points race towards a class championship. In class 5-1600, the competition has been tough between Larry Negrette Jr in the No. 557 car, David Herida in the No. 571 car, and Rodolfo Martinez in the No. 582 car. Herida managed to finish first with Martinez finishing in second. Although Negrette Jr. was third in class, he’s been consistent all season and took the lead in points towards a class championship. Alex Gonzales started the year with a DNF at the SCORE San Felipe 250, but finished first at the SCORE Baja 500 and at this SCORE Baja 400 to dominate the class in his No. 1196 car. Eric Solorzano in the No. 1111 car started the race but could not finish, and it was the same for Luis Fernando Garcia in the No. 1100 car.
