Untapped Potential , Homeschool students, communities and associations are hungry for fun group activities like ice skating. T HE NUMBERS ARE CLEAR: HOMESCHOOLING IS ON THE RISE. According to census data, 11% of U.S. households are now homeschooling, and that number has doubled during the pandemic to roughly 5 million in total. So what does that mean for you and I as rink operators? Opportunity…big time. Filling the Void We all want to sell more ice and most of us do a good job of that during the peak hours, but the challenge is obviously when kids are in school and the rink is quiet. But homeschooling might be able to help fill those times and provide a little extra revenue that can be quite consistent. Homeschoolers still want to get out and socialize and exercise like every other kid. That is where we can step in and help the community out. 3 Ways to Provide Programming There are basically three ways to provide some programming to these groups: • First, we can simply promote public skating to the group.
