CHALLENGE New York City Transit (NYC Transit) relies on more than 60 surveillance cameras to help ensure the safety for over 1.7 billion subway riders annually, but these cameras operate in polluted underground environments. Because of this, they needed a reliable, high-performance processing solution that can rapidly process images and transmit real-time information for transportation station crews to monitor activities and take appropriate and immediate action as necessary. SOLUTION NYC Transit turned to Mercury and its RES multi-graphic processing unit (GPU) 3U rugged rack server. This military-grade compact, lightweight server was designed and tested to withstand temperature extremes and intense shock and vibration like those produced by high-speed trains and included a removable front filter to protect against dust and particles. Two 2nd Generation Intel ® Xeon ® Scalable processors and four GPUs provided the computational capability required to deliver real-time, actionable insights. Dual-redundant, hot-swappable AC/DC power supplies, memory retention and vibration dampeners further assured reliable operation in the underground environment. RESULT The successful collection and processing of imaging data from multiple surveillance cameras allows NYC Transit to provide around-the-clock monitoring of its subway platforms. Reliable and uninterrupted access to the 24/7 event data also helps transportation station crews provide a safer environment for passengers by identifying suspicious activities, attending to emergencies, and quickly recognizing service disruptions.
