20 WORCESTER HOMECOMING 2022 HOMECOMING TRIBUTE James David " J.D." Power lll grew up on Wakefield Street in Worcester, where he developed his work ethic early on through a paper route and digging holes for the Electrical Utility. A St Peter High School and 1953 Holy Cross grad, he went on to work for Ford Motor Co in customer research, and then for chain saw manufacturer McCulloch. In 1968, initially working from his kitchen table, he founded J.D. Power & Associates, which over the next five decades developed a reputation for delivering thoughtful, independent insights that championed the voice of the customer. Their surveys have been deeply influential in the auto industry, where Power helped an inward-looking industry transform into one that places customers at the pinnacle of importance. J.D. Power and Associates would come to embody principles that its founder honed as an undergraduate at Holy Cross: Listen, think critically and, when it's time to speak, speak the truth. Among his many philanthropic efforts was the formation of J.D. Power Center for Liberal Arts in the World at his alma mater. The program expands experiential learning at Holy Cross, allowing students to integrate academics with opportunities and apply their Holy Cross education in the real world. This proud native of Worcester became an internationally recognized and groundbreaking leader in his field. J.D Power passed away in January of 2021 at the age of 89. As the city celebrates its 300th year, Worcester Homecoming honors his lifetime of achievement, and recognizes J.D. Power as one of our most accomplished citizens.
