9 WORCESTER HOMECOMING 2022 ALAN BERUBE Senior Fellow and Deputy Director at Brookings Metro, a division of the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C., Alan coordinates and amplifies research from across Brookings Metro on how to strengthen economic opportunity in regions, cities, and communities. He has authored dozens of Brookings publications on economic and demographic trends in metropolitan areas, social policies affecting families and communities, and the role of cities in a globalizing economy. Berube is co- author of "Confronting Suburban Poverty in America" (2013), and lead author of "Renewing America's promise through older industrial cities" (2018). Prior to joining Brookings in 2001, he was a policy advisor in the Office of Community Development Policy at the U.S. Treasury Department. A native of Oxford MA, he holds a master's degree in public policy from the Georgetown Public Policy Institute, and a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from Stanford University. JAMES MULSHINE, MD An internationally recognized lung cancer expert and Holy Cross grad, Jim spent 25 years leading research at the National Cancer Institute. A widely published authority, among his many awards are the Joseph Cullen Award for lifetime scientific achievements in lung cancer prevention research from the IASLAC World Conference. Jim is currently an Associate Provost at the Rush University Medical School in Chicago where he has served in a variety of leadership positions, and continues to pursue early detection of lung cancer on a population-based scale. KEN BARRETT Ken is General Motors' Chief Diversity Officer, a position he took on in 2012. A native of Leicester, he attended St. John's High School and Holy Cross. Captain Barrett spent 28 years in the U.S. Navy before joining General Motors. After multiple ship tours in operations, navigation and engineering, he became the Navy's first Diversity Director, where he achieved historic levels of minority and female officer additions and transformational work-life balance initiatives. Additionally, he served as the Under Secretary of Defense's Acting Director, Office of Diversity Management and Equal Opportunity. Ken sits on many boards – including St. John's High School, National Organization of Disability (NOD), Advancing Minority Interest in Engineering (AMIE) and Defense Advisory Committee on Women in the Services (DACOWITS).
