When AWD Class 1 buggies came into the scene, RPI Racing wanted one to compete in, but also had some ideas for improvement. They presented these ideas to Alumi Craft, and the outcome yielded a re-configured chassis that removed the small block V8s common to Class 1 vehicles, and instead ran a Wik’s Racing 565 cubic inch V8 with 900 horsepower. In addition, the suspension system was modified to run 40-inch diameter tires. The RPI buggy has the power of a SCORE Trophy Truck with a Weddle Albins transaxle and driveline that can handle the torque and horsepower at all four wheels. Shelby and Cody Reid drove the brand-new car to an impressive 2021 SCORE San Felipe 250 victory that dominated the field. The team is still sorting out the “new car” quirks but they and their big block buggy is taking the class to a new level of competition. SJ
