S P O N S O R P E R S P E C T I V E Mark Schwartz Director, Enterprise Strategy AWS It's tempting to think of the cloud as just a new kind of infrastructure, a replacement for corporate data centers. To view it that way is to miss the critical change that has been happening in the business world: As the pace of change increases, it's the cloud that lets companies respond to that change creatively, quickly, and with lowered risk. It provides easy access to emerging technologies like machine learning, edge computing, virtual reality, and advanced analytics, while keeping companies safe by helping them put in place guardrails for security, compliance, and financial control. We see this every day with our AWS customers as they innovate and create competitive advantages with the cloud. You can think of it as similar to the advent of electricity in houses through wall sockets, which unleashed the creativity of appliance designers to invent everything from toasters and vacuum cleaners to game consoles. The cloud provides computing power and new technologies on demand, scaled to the enterprise's needs, priced based on usage, and instantly adjustable as the market changes. Like electricity, it is the basis for innovation; it powers today's digital revolution. The cloud, in other words, supports business strategy and lets organizations respond nimbly to change by seizing opportunities and sidestepping risks, continuously improving processes and making them leaner. In this report by Harvard Business Review Analytic Services, you'll see that companies are using the cloud to become more efficient, incorporate more data into their decisions, adjust to change, support remote work, and improve their digital interactions with their customers. The report is filled with examples of cloud-driven innovation and customer service. To get the most value from the cloud, our customers often want to change their business processes, corporate cultures, and governance frameworks—to engage, as we say, in digital transformation. At AWS, we support them in these efforts, using our experience in cloud transformation to provide guidance, best practices, and learnings from other customers. In this report you'll get a sense of what is possible in the cloud and why the cloud is so important to businesses—not just for replacing their data centers but also as a tool for supporting their strategies, operations, growth, and innovation. As a spokesperson for Porsche says in the report, "Cloud enables us to get the best digital experience to our customers and to our employees." And that's what matters.
