HOCKEY WEEK ACROSS AMERICA, a celebration of the game and those who make it great, will be held Feb. 20-26, 2023 with a series of new and exciting themes dotting the schedule. HOCKEY HISTORY O F F T HE D R AW 10 // NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2022 USAHOCKEYMAGAZINE.COM Alaska has a rich and storied hockey history and the Alaska Gold Kings have long been at the center of the action. Now a new documentary puts the iconic Fairbanks team into the national spotlight by showcasing the legacy that has long been woven into the fabric of the city and the 49th state. Footage of the Gold Kings from the 1970s, '80s and '90s is interspersed with interviews that show the special place the team and its players have in the hearts of local hockey fans. "The primary message is the connection between the team and the community—to the benefit of both," said local hockey historian Randy Zarnke, who was a driving force behind the film. After the premier, the Gold Kings team, along with Alaska native players Pam Dreyer, Brian Swanson, Kerry Weiland and Kord Cernich were inducted into the Alaska Hockey Hall of Fame. TUESDAY, FEB. 21 (#HOCKEYISFOREVERYONE) Celebrates the diversity and inclusion of the game with Hockey Is For Everyone Day. WEDNESDAY, FEB. 22 (#STICKSALUTE) Stick Salute Day on Wednesday, Feb. 22, is a tribute to those who have paved the way for the next generation, including coaches, officials, volunteers and local hockey heroes who make our organization so special. THURSDAY, FEB. 23 (#THROWBACKTHURDAY) The week continues on Thursday, Feb. 23, with Hockey History Day. USA Hockey will be celebrating with throwbacks of our national teams and some of our favorite Team USA athletes. FRIDAY, FEB. 24 (#HOCKEYJERSEYDAY) Friday marks the return of the always popular Wear Your Favorite Hockey Jersey Day. Fans are encouraged to wear their jerseys to school or work and tweet their photos and tagging @usahockey. SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 25 (#TRYHOCKEY) The weekend kicks off on Saturday, Feb. 25, with the first of two Try Hockey For Free Days, where hundreds of local rinks nationwide will be holding free hockey clinics for children ages 4 to 9, with certified coaches and volunteers. SUNDAY, FEB. 26 (#WELCOMETOHOCKEY) The week's festivities wrap up on Sunday, Feb. 26, with Welcome To Hockey Day where USA Hockey will be celebrating with our favorite stories, and advice, from hockey parents, as well as sharing resources for new parents to better understand the sport and how to give their child an excellent youth sports experience.
