That was until an NHL.com writer called to congratulate him on his 40-year milestone as an NHL general manager. " Wow! Forty years; it's hard to believe," Poile said during a telephone interview. "Time flies when you're having a good time." Poile became the youngest GM in the league at 33 when he landed his first job with the Washington Capitals on Aug. 30, 1982. During his first season at the helm, the Capitals clinched a berth in the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time in franchise history, the first of 14 straight playoff appearances. He would move on to a new challenge in 1997 when he accepted the role as the general manager of the expansion Predators. Twenty-five years later, Poile is still running the successful franchise in Nashville. During four decades in the NHL Poile has been honored with the Lester Patrick Trophy in 2001 and named NHL General Manager of the Year in 2017 when the Predators reached the Stanley Cup Final for the first time. He was voted the Sporting News Executive of the Year in 2007. A member of the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame, Poile is the first general manager in NHL history to hold that position for 1,000 games with two different teams. "I'm so happy that I picked Nashville," said Poile, who also served as the GM of the 2014 U.S. Olympic Team. "It all worked out really well." NHL Registration is now open for the 2023 USA Hockey National Coaches Symposium, where coaches from across the country seeking their Level 5 coaching certification will gather in Falmouth, Mass. The event will be held May 4-7 at the Sea Crest Beach Hotel. Typically held every other year, the Level 5 Coaches Symposium will offer general sessions, as well as the opportunity to explore innovative approaches to coaching in rotating breakout sessions. It will also include the Gold Goalie Clinic. This will mark the first time the Level 5 has been held in Massachusetts. The final list of speakers will be available closer to the date of the event.
