2022 USE CASE STREGA Smart Valve Actuators Increase Crop Yields and Reduce Irrigation Costs for Farmers THE FARM IRRIGATION CHALLENGE Large orchards and farms can cover thousands of hectares. This presents farmers with a challenge: How to control irrigation effectively across such a wide area? The traditional solution is to lay communication cables from a central controller to each irrigation valve. But this requires many kilometers of cable, making it complex, expensive and extremely difficult to maintain. STREGA has developed a solution: LoRaWAN ® -enabled time- controlled wireless Smart Valve Actuators. Thanks to LoRaWAN ® technology, the Smart Valve Actuators are fully wireless – giving famers better irrigation control, without the cabling costs. The solution is used on a range of farms in Europe, the Americas, the Middle East, Australia and New Zealand. LoRaWAN ® CONTROL For the Smart Valve Actuators to work successfully, they need to be able to operate wirelessly over long distances. This is where LoRaWAN ® comes in. The extreme range and exceptional obstacle penetration of LoRaWAN ® enable the Smart Valve Actuators to work on the most challenging topography – even in urban areas or if the actuators are buried below the ground. To further reduce costs and increase simplicity, the Smart Valve Actuators also eliminate the need for irrigation controllers. Instead, farmers can switch valves on and off and set irrigation schedules from their smartphone or tablet. HIGHER CROP YIELDS AND LOWER WATER CONSUMPTION Controlled via a smartphone app, STREGA Smart Valve Actuators make it simple for farmers to control their irrigation schedules. As a result, they can optimize watering times to suit the weather and exact needs of their crops. This can increase crop yields and reduce water consumption. LONG LIFE AND MINIMAL MAINTENANCE With its ultra-low-power consumption, the STREGA Smart Valve Actuator can operate on lithium batteries for more than 7 years (based on 3 irrigation periods per day, all year round). They can also be connected to an external power source, such as a micro solar panel, for unlimited time operation.
