Kahua | www.kahua.com 2 Selecting a program management information system is not just one decision. Choosing which technology to adopt involves a series of smaller decisions that must be made along the way. Many construction organizations can get lost in all the choices. On one hand, organizations want a quick start so business is not interrupted; on the other hand, there are specific requirements that the system will need to be tailored to. Can a system only handle one of these challenges? Dive further into the difference between rapid and configurable deployments and learn about a solution that is changing the way organizations adopt PMIS technology. Rapid Deployment What to know When an organization is looking to get up and running quickly, the system selected is labeled as out of the box or commercial of the shelf. Since these types of systems have basic setups, organizations can connect data and easily train users. With a simple setup, one of the biggest selling points is the speed of deployment. The entire process can be completed in a short amount of time. Organizations can minimize time to value and start to see the benefits of the business processes quickly. However, if an organization expands or needs to change workflows, many out-of-the- box solutions cannot bend and grow with it. Keep in mind One thing to note when adopting out-of-the-box solutions is that organizations will receive software as is, which includes key features, business processes and nomenclature. Out of the box is a perfect fit for any organization with straight forward workflows and standard requirements. Configurable Deployment What to know Highly configurable PMIS solutions offer organizations a much wider range of functions. Sometimes just changing a business process or two can have a significant impact on usability. Other organizations require a higher level of personalization. The system needs to be matched with business processes, terminology and numeration more closely. Once deployed, configurable software works in a manner that end users are accustomed to, which helps with adoption. Keep in mind More coordination and effort are needed for a configured deployment and a slightly longer timeline is necessary. More than likely there will be instances when business processes need to change because the organization has adjusted or external factors –such as regulatory or governance – change. In this case, organizations can create new processes or add/remove steps to an existing process. Updating the system requires further development and end-user training. Additionally, configurable does not mean customizable. Customizable means organizations spend more money and more time.
