Tips to begin your finance career. 1 With a large pool of college students competing for jobs in the finance industry, you'll want to increase your knowledge to improve your chances of employment. We've compiled tips to help you prepare for the job search. Prepare an organized resume Your resume is likely the initial information a company will see regarding your qualifications—it acts as a printed first impression. Be sure to include all job experiences, even if they're not related to the field. Add your academic achievements, such as your GPA or relevant awards. Other information to include: • Technical skills that may be relevant in a finance position • Clubs you're involved in, such as finance clubs or community volunteer clubs • Life experiences and lessons that may be transferrable to a finance role • Skills or interests that could help you stand out Take part in internship programs Internships are a great way to see what you like and dislike about certain positions or companies. On a real team, you can learn more about yourself, your working style, and your interests before pursuing a full-time job. These experiences are strong points to add to your resume and discuss in job interviews. Internships also are a great way to network and find a mentor who you can stay in touch with. Network often Networking is important during internships and other aspects of your college life. Developing meaningful connections across your desired field provides you with sources for advice and career assistance. Networking with guest speakers at your school or even discussing your goals with teachers could also lead to job opportunities. Accept that you may not start in your dream position Considering the amount of competition and the battle for higher-paying positions, don't be discouraged if you don't immediately see the returns you expected. Consider taking a lower-paying job in the industry to gain experience before pursuing the role you hope to obtain. Stay up to date with your field Relevant economic news and events can easily be found on websites, economic journals, or through the connections you've made. Knowledge of current financial trends and topics is important to have for conversations, interviews, and network opportunities. When you're well-informed, you can form knowledgeable opinions and have meaningful conversations on financial topics.
